A lecture on Chumash rock art and petroglyphs will highlight the monthly meeting of the Santa Susana Mountain Park Assn. in Chatsworth on Monday.

Western rock art researcher Richard Quist will present a slide show from areas inhabited by the Chumash more than 100 years ago, said Al Knight, vice president of the association.

Quist said the Chumash ranged from as far north as San Luis Obispo down to Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, as well as Catalina Island.

“I’m going to be talking about styles and how they vary from area to area,” said Quist, who is also an association member.

“The Chumash had different dialects and cultural differences among them and I’m going to show how that’s reflected in their paintings.”

Quist hopes information offered at the meeting will help the public acquire an appreciation for Southern California’s past.

Members of the Chumash and Fernandeno nations plan to be on hand, Knight said. “Having the local Native American community attend the meeting makes it very special for everybody,” he added.

The group schedules the third Monday of each month to report on developments concerning Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park.

Monday’s meeting will be held at Glendale Federal Bank, 21821 Devonshire St., Chatsworth, beginning at 7 p.m.
