Malibu Bans Watercraft From Area Near Surfrider Beach

Malibu City Council members voted unanimously to prohibit the launching of small motorized watercraft from the private beach adjacent to Surfrider State Beach, officials said.

The small motorized vessels such as Jet Skis and other similar watercraft are already banned from several other private beach areas in Malibu, said City Atty. Christi Hogin.

The city moved to extend the prohibition after lifeguards raised concerns about the safety of swimmers near the state beach.

“Jet Skis and swimmers are a bad combination,” Hogin said.

The ordinance was introduced at Monday’s council meeting and will take effect 30 days after its second reading, which is scheduled for June 22.
