A 17-year-old high school student was airlifted to a local hospital Thursday after she and a 16-year-old passenger drove into a power pole, said Lt. Luis Ochoa of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The girls, whose identities have not been released because of their ages, were wearing seat belts but suffered major injuries.

The older girl was driving a Mazda south on Slater Avenue at 2:16 p.m. when she lost control and slammed into the pole at the corner of Edwards Street, Ochoa said. The driver sustained head, neck and internal injuries and was airlifted to UCI Medical Center; she was listed in critical condition. The passenger was also taken to UCI Medical Center and was listed in serious condition.
