An argument over $1.73 in laundry money led to a stabbing that seriously injured a Costa Mesa man late Wednesday, police said.

Regina Benward, 36, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in the attack on her boyfriend, Costa Mesa police Lt. Tom Curtis said.

About 9:45 p.m. Benward arrived at her home in the 100 block of Cabrillo Street very drunk, Lt. Ron Smith said. She accused her boyfriend of stealing her laundry money, then stabbed him when he tried to leave the home, Smith said. The man--who was not identified because he is a victim of alleged domestic violence--sustained two 4-inch cuts to his lower back and is in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Smith said Thursday.
