Guinea-Bissau’s state radio said Thursday that the government of President Joao Bernardo Vieira had accepted an offer of mediation by religious and political leaders aimed at avoiding all-out confrontation with rebels in the West African state.

The mediators said Vieira had agreed to their offer to try to negotiate a cease-fire, and they were now awaiting a response from the heavily armed rebels who are holding a key garrison on the outskirts of the city, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported from Bissau.
