* ABOUT PARAGUAY: The man to look out for is goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert, a hulking figure prone to wearing a bulldog emblem on his jersey and an intimidating scowl on his face. He is also useful as the taker of free kicks and penalty kicks, having scored from both.

* ABOUT BULGARIA: Hristo Stoitchkov and company peaked at World Cup ’94 in the United States. Balding Yordan Lechkov, who knocked Germany out of the last tournament with that memorable headed goal at Giants Stadium, is no longer on the team. But Stoitchkov is still around and is just as argumentative--and talented--as ever.

* OUTLOOK: Bulgaria finished fourth in 1994 but has not blended enough youth into the team to expect anywhere near that success this time around. Still, it should have too much physical power and too much experience for Paraguay, which struggles to score at the best of times.
