Shahbaz Meat Products Inc. of Sun Valley is recalling about 38 pounds of semi-dry sausage that may be contaminated with a dangerous bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday.

The meat-processing company is recalling “AMI Soujouk Semi-Dry Sausage,” packaged in sizes of about 1 pound each and distributed in the Los Angeles area. The product label on each package contains a USDA inspection seal “Est. 18854.”

The sausage may be contaminated with lysteria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease that can cause miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women, and infections in those with weak immune systems, including the frail or elderly.

Symptoms of the disease include high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea.
