Yorba Linda Needs a High School

Share

* Re “Growing Signs of Change,” May 28:

I moved to Yorba Linda in 1965. There was no high school in town so we were bused to Troy High in Fullerton. Today, 33 years later, Yorba Linda still does not have a high school.

Now, after many years of growth on the east side, the City Council seems to be endorsing a new development of about 600 homes on the west side. Where will these new homeowners send their high school-age offspring? The developers are talking about a new elementary school, a park and a golf course. What about a high school?

The City Council seems more interested in supplying recreational facilities for its residents (new golf courses and sports complexes) and letting other cities worry about its young adults’ education.

I currently reside in Anaheim, across from Esperanza High School. As the student body at Esperanza continues to grow, my concern is for the Anaheim residents in my neighborhood and where our kids will go to high school. Esperanza is in Anaheim but is part of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Will we be told that our kids will be transferred to another high school miles away? Will that put a burden on a different school?

I know of no other city of this size in the county that does not provide a high school for its residents. It’s time for Yorba Linda to show some responsibility to its citizens and build a much needed high school.
