Prop. 187 Voters

In drawing a distinction between the vote on Prop. 187 in 1994 and Prop. 227 in 1998, The Times states: “Whereas the message of Prop. 187 in 1994 pitted Latinos against the other ethnic groups in the state . . .” (“The Postelection Story,” editorial, June 7). As one who voted for Prop. 187 in 1994, I wasn’t voting against Latinos. I voted against those who’ve broken our immigration laws. I think it’s important to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration in government benefits made available to immigrants in California.

Does The Times have evidence that others who voted for Prop. 187 were voting against Latinos? If not, isn’t The Times contributing to ethnic division by making such unfounded editorial assertions?
