Language Schools

I cannot help but notice the irony in “Asian Language Schools Foster Skills, Traditions” (June 8). We have just gone through a heated debate on Prop. 227. Here we are, having Asian parents worrying that their children will only know English and therefore sending 50,000 of their young to remedial native language and cultural schools on the weekends.

I wonder if the Latino parents have the same worry? I also wonder what the opponents of Prop. 227 have to say about this?

I was one of the reluctant children who had to attend Chinese school when I was a kid. I spoke not a word of English when I came to America. I attended a public school near downtown L.A., before the bilingual program. Thanks to my parents, today I’m trilingual.
