The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering an eight-week course on boating "rules of the road" for recreational sailors and boat enthusiasts, instructors announced Monday.
The course includes lessons on boating safety, seamanship, legal requirements, heavy weather, radio use, navigation and knot tying, among other skills.
"This class is for everyone, from the guy with the Jet Ski to the guy with the 55-foot boat," said instructor Eric Moberg, who has taught the course for five years. "The same rules apply."
The course utilizes texts designed by the U.S. Coast Guard for nonprofessional boaters, Moberg said. At the end of the course, students must pass an exam in order to receive a diploma.
The course is free, though textbooks cost $25, and will be held Wednesdays at the San Pedro Fish Market at Ports O'Call Village.
