Woman Killed, 2 Hurt in Freeway Collision
A Riverside woman died and two others were injured when their Toyota 4-Runner flipped several times Monday on the Costa Mesa Freeway, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The Toyota’s driver, Pauline Luong, 28, was traveling north on the freeway near Walnut Avenue about 1:25 p.m. Monday, CHP Officer Mark Reeves said. She swerved to avoid a tire tread in the carpool lane and lost control.
The vehicle careened across the freeway and struck the rear of a Ford pickup, causing the Toyota to overturn several times and hit a sound wall on the right side of the freeway, Reeves said.
Luong and passenger Thuong Luong, 26, both from Riverside, were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana and released Monday night. Passenger Lai Pham, 59, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m.
The driver and passenger of the pickup were not injured, Reeves said. Police made no arrests and determined that the collision was an accident.
