* San Jose-based Novellus Systems Inc., a maker of films used in computer chips, said it’s cutting 10% of its work force and moving its thin-film operations to deal with reduced spending by semiconductor companies. The company said the changes will save tens of millions of dollars. Novellus has about 1,800 employees. Novellus stock fell 56 cents to close at $33.63 on Nasdaq. It had 1997 sales of $534 million.
