Wild Discoveries

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.

Chill, Dorothy. That Yellow Brick Road thing is tired, girlfriend. You’re in Century City now. And this place is the Discovery Channel Store, among the first in California.

Barely three weeks since its opening (another store is in San Diego), DCS is bringing a myriad of the Discovery Channel’s programs--including the wildly popular “Wild Discovery” show--to life in every nook and cranny of the swank new store at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. in the Century City Shopping Center & Marketplace.

The new stores follow similar ones, such as the KCET Store of Knowledge and the Nature Co. chain (recently purchased by Discovery Communications Inc., which also owns the Discovery stores as well as the Discovery Channel).

These are what retail experts call “shoppertainment” because of their interactive appeal.

At the Discovery stores, nature, history, science, aviation and geology abound. So do culture, music, ideas and travel. It’s all here in a high-tech interactive way with stuff, stuff and more stuff from around the world: Africa, Indonesia, Brazil and the USA.

Our faves are the Shark Kite ($24); Poco Loco dinosaur soap (starting at $11.25); a framed Rosenbergia beetle ($125) and, for that Dorothy in your life, a stuffed toy Siberian tiger ($24).
