* ABOUT ARGENTINA: It had a tougher time than expected in its opener against Japan, winning by only 1-0 on a goal by Gabriel Batistuta. Injured defender Jose Chamot is expected to return.

* ABOUT JAMAICA: The Jamaicans acquitted themselves respectably in a 3-1 loss to Croatia. They’re not afraid of anyone, but the only points they get might be for audacity.

* OUTLOOK: Argentine coach Daniel Passarella said his team has more to offer than it showed against Japan and was merely nervous in its debut. Jamaica, needing points, is likely to take some risks. Argentina is fully capable of exploiting every mistake the Jamaicans make.

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist. She became the first female journalist to be honored with a plaque in the Hall of Fame of a major professional sport as the 2005 winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Elmer Ferguson Award, awarded to writers “who have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.” A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she has covered 18 Olympics.
