Grant Sustains Reading Workshop
Orangeview High School has received a $90,000 grant to improve students’ reading skills through drama.
The three-year Middle School Demonstration Program grant provides $30,000 a year to set up a specialized reading class, parent workshops and teacher training sessions.
The reading class, which will be open to about 30 students who read at least two years below their grade levels, will combine literature and drama to spark interest in reading.
Students’ parents also must help their child maintain an at-home reading log and attend one meeting a month to learn about reading development.
The program will begin in the fall.
