SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

I first wrote about Happy Eyes several years ago and have been referring consumers to its operation ever since. It continues to be one of the very best sources in the Los Angeles area for eye wear. For single-vision glasses, the price is $29.95, and for bifocals it’s $49.95--including frames. There are about 500 to choose from in this price category, many in the new metal designs.

The latest in transitional lenses (those that change color depending on the light) are much improved since they were originally introduced; the Transitional III change quicker and get darker.

At many sources around town the lenses alone for these run $120, but Happy Eyes’ price with frames is $95.

For progressive lenses (no-line bifocals) you can expect to pay $150 without the frames at other stores, but the price here is $110 with frames. If you absolutely must have designer frames, you can figure on a hefty discount here.

Happy Eyes makes nonglare Hi-Index lenses for $80, and if you want the special coating to reduce reflection, it can be applied to your existing glasses for $40.

Turnaround time is two to three days, but if you’re in a rush, owner Tony Sarkissian and his associate Victor Vaca can generally have them ready for you in a couple of hours--at no extra cost.

Happy Eyes is doing more repair work these days, much of it from one of the major discount chains.

Happy Eyes is one of those companies that has received rave reviews from readers of this column throughout the years. But that isn’t always the case: Some of the stores or services I have written about have fallen from our list for a variety of reasons. Check our hotline--(310) 203-2033--to be sure we are still recommending a certain store or service.

Weekend Supersale: Patio cooking is in full swing. If you’re looking for a new barbecue grill, there’s always a sale at Armand’s Discount, but right now a super-special warrants a mention. The CharmGlo (Model 650) with stainless burner and cart that retail elsewhere for $599 are $399, and a Falcon all-aluminum unit for $599 is $200 less than at other sources. Armand’s Discount, 9400 Venice Blvd., Culver City. (310) 839-5555.
