Storms Caused $3 Million in Damage, Report Says
February storms caused $3 million in damage locally, according to a status report submitted to the City Council this week.
About $2 million of the repairs are expected to be covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency; the rest will come from the city’s general fund, said public works Director John Clement.
Most of the damage has been from landslides, he said.
There are more than 250 active landslides in Malibu and although most are in mountain areas, those that have destroyed city roads have caused enormous problems, he said.
The biggest challenge for his department is the removal of a five-acre wall of dirt that fell across Calle del Barco and Rambla Orienta in February, he said.
Road crews built a temporary road and staircase for residents of 18 homes who were virtually trapped by the slide, but the soil is still moving more than an inch a day, Clement said.
He estimated that grading and rebuilding the roads would cost $650,000 and take three months.
