Arraignment Delayed for Slaying Suspect
An 18-year-old Mira Monte man was charged with murder and ordered held on $250,000 bail Thursday for allegedly stabbing 21-year-old Bobby Ferrer of Oxnard earlier this week in a fight over a football jacket.
The scheduled arraignment of Jose Lara was postponed until July 16 after a brief hearing Thursday.
If convicted of first-degree murder and the special circumstance of using a knife, Lara could face a sentence of 25 years to life in state prison, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Greg Phillips.
Lara peacefully surrendered in front of a home on Loma Vista Drive in Meiners Oaks late Tuesday, according to authorities.
He is accused of pulling a folding knife during a fight and stabbing Ferrer once in the chest as Ferrer’s fiancee watched in horror.
Ferrer, who was pronounced dead at Ojai Valley Community Hospital, went to the home to confront whoever ripped his Dallas Cowboys jacket at a gathering there the day before.
Phillips said authorities have no other suspects and that he has no idea whether the incident was gang-related.
