Airport Group Gives $4,000 to Scouts, Fund

A benefit held by the Van Nuys Airport Assn. raised more than $4,000 for the Los Angeles Fireman’s Relief Fund and the San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council, airport association officials said Friday.

“It was a home run,” said Jim Dunn, the master of ceremonies at Thursday night’s fund-raising event and a board member of the airport association. “The community supports the airport, and we just wanted to return some of that support.”

The nearly 450 attendees listened to live Cajun music and munched on barbecued food and jambalaya while participating in a silent auction to benefit Valley Girl Scouts and the families of deceased firefighters.

Prizes auctioned off included rides in a Lear jet, an open-cockpit biplane, a World War II P-51 Mustang and a B-25 Mitchell Bomber. Weekend getaways, overnight packages and dinners were also auctioned. Items were donated by the members of the airport association.

The proceeds were equally split between the firefighters fund and the Girl Scouts.

“We still have some checks coming in,” Dunn said. “We were just kind of overwhelmed. It was the biggest party we have had in the eight years we’ve done this.”
