An unidentified pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning by a 25-year-old hit-and-run driver who later turned himself in to police and failed a sobriety test, police said.

The victim was crossing Brookhurst Street at Catalina Avenue in Anaheim about 1:55 a.m. when he was struck by a Nissan Stanza, according to investigators. About 20 minutes later, Derandy Jewel Morgan of Anaheim called police to report that he was the driver responsible.

Morgan told investigators he was driving south on Brookhurst when he hit the victim, who suffered major head injuries, according to Anaheim Investigator Rick Alexander.

Morgan failed a field sobriety test and was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim for minor cuts before being booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene of an accident, police said.

The victim was not in the crosswalk when he was hit. It was unclear if Morgan ran a red light or the pedestrian was crossing against a traffic signal, and police were seeking witnesses, Alexander said.

The victim was thrown into the path of a second vehicle, identified by witnesses only as an older, brown Chevy pickup truck. The pickup truck also ran over the victim and did not stay at the scene, Alexander said.

“We are seeking that driver as well,” Alexander said.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident or the second driver call (714) 765-1861.
