Former County Chief Undergoes Surgery
Richard Wittenberg, former chief administrative officer of Ventura County, was in good condition Monday after undergoing three hours of surgery for prostate cancer.
Wittenberg, 58, served the county for 27 years before taking a similar position with Santa Clara County in January 1995.
Wittenberg said he is doing as well as can be expected after surgery at UCLA Medical Center.
“They felt they caught the cancer at a very early stage,” he said.
Wittenberg said he was diagnosed with cancer in March, adding that his father had suffered from cancer of the liver.
But the ordeal did not shake his sense of humor.
Asked how the operation went, Wittenberg responded with a laugh: “I’ve been better.”
