Last year, passengers filed 4,550 complaints with the U.S. Department of Transportation against the 10 major U.S. airlines, up from 3,783 in 1996. Among the alleged problems were flight cancellations, bumping, overcharging, lost baggage and employee rudeness.

Northwest: 1.39

American: 1.06

United: 0.95

TWA: 0.83

US Airways: 0.78

Continental: 0.77

Delta: 0.64

Alaska: 0.63

Southwest: 0.28
