Desert Landfill
Wayne Lusvardi of Pasadena (letter, March 3) complains that Judge Judith McConnell’s decision to stop a (potentially toxic) trash landfill next to the Joshua Tree National Park amounts to “the judicial usurpation of democracy by our courts,” which he sees as questioning “the greater public necessity.”
We in the desert do not want your trash. Surprise! The entire community of Pasadena could outvote my county (Imperial), but why should that vote be allowed to diminish my health or the great natural resources of our desert? The American government has been set up to protect the interests of all, including the few, the small, the voiceless. This is not about “environmental totalitarianism,” it is about protecting citizens who cannot outvote ignorance. The desert is a fragile ecosystem which must be preserved. We are tired of city people thinking that putting their waste away from them simply makes it disappear. Protect our desert: It is one of California’s most fragile and beautiful ecosystems.
