Spectrian Corp. warned of lower-than-anticipated sales and said it expects a loss in its fiscal fourth quarter because of weak demand for its wireless-phone network equipment in the U.S. and Asia. Sunnyvale-based Spectrian also said it fired about 200 workers, or 25% of its work force, to cut costs. It expects to take a charge of $500,000 for severance and other costs associated with the job cuts. The maker of amplifiers that boost radio signals in wireless phone networks said orders for its products are slowing in Asia and in the U.S. Spectrian doesn’t expect demand to improve for two to three quarters. The company was expected to earn 19 cents a share for the quarter ending March 31, the average estimate of analysts. Revenue for the quarter is expected to be $25 million to $30 million, down from $47.2 million in the previous quarter and $31.6 million a year earlier. Spectrian stock fell 75 cents to $16.50 on Nasdaq before trading was halted after the warning was announced.
