Larry Burton Thrall; Developer

Larry Burton Thrall, 56, a Southern California attorney and real estate developer who recently had been creating resorts in Palm Desert, has died.

Thrall died March 2 in Washington, D.C., of complications after emergency abdominal surgery, his family said Monday. Thrall had lived in Hancock Park for the past 32 years.

The developer had been an investing partner of former U.S. Treasury Secretary William E. Simon and was instrumental in arranging their acquisition of the Honolulu Federal Savings & Loan in the mid-1980s.

Born in San Bernardino, Thrall was a graduate of UC Riverside and USC School of Law. In addition to his law practice, he invested in and managed real estate developments throughout Southern California and in Hawaii and New Jersey.

As a community volunteer, Thrall was active with the Assistance League, annually playing Santa Claus for underprivileged children. He was also a popular mentor for young people beginning business careers.

Thrall is survived by his wife of 38 years, Beverly Walker Thrall; his parents, Betty and Dale Sharp; three children, Larry B. Thrall Jr., Elizabeth Clifford and Kathryn Porter; a brother, Steven Thrall; and five grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of the Recessional, Forest Lawn, Glendale.
