Officers Protest Outside Mayor’s Inauguration
About 50 police officers demonstrated outside an inauguration ceremony for the city’s new mayor Tuesday night to protest an impasse with the city over contract negotiations.
While nearly 400 guests filed into a large tent in front of City Hall to honor new mayor Les Bronte, officers walked Crescent Drive carrying signs that read, “Eight months without a contract and counting” and “Address the issues, don’t hide from them.”
In January, members rejected an offer from the city of a 4% raise each year for three years because the city would not offer sergeants the additional 10% raise they requested.
The city has declined to improve its offer. Both sides have agreed to begin nonbinding arbitration March 26.
