Fire Damages Two Apartments
Two families were displaced Sunday after a fire broke out at dawn, engulfing the roof of a two-story, four-apartment building.
Firefighters were called at 6 a.m. to battle a blaze at 16731 Bartlett Lane that consumed the wooden shake roof and attic area of two upper apartments.
No one inside the homes was injured, said battalion chief Greg Wiggins. However, one firefighter was hurt when he grabbed a rafter and a nail went through his gloved hand.
The two families, who were not identified, included a single adult with a 7-year-old son, and a couple and their 6-year-old son, according to a Red Cross spokesman. They are receiving assistance with shelter, meals and emergency aid.
Nine firetrucks were called to the scene, along with 32 firefighters.
“The wooden shake roof had a lot of potential for a quick fire spread, so we didn’t hesitate to call out additional support,” Wiggins said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
