Loyola Marymount Success Has Valley Flavor

Loyola Marymount (13-9-1) has won six consecutive games in baseball, with several players from the region playing important roles at the plate and on the mound.

Former Westlake High outfielder Matt Riordan is batting .432 and has 35 runs batted in. Former Crespi outfielder Rob Hirsh is batting .364.

Former Cleveland pitcher Mike Schultz (1-1) has a 6.75 earned-run average. He struck out 10 batters in 6 1/3 innings last week against Gonzaga.

Former Crespi pitcher Brian Felten is 4-1 with a 7.55 ERA.

TENNIS

Big week: Cal State Northridge women’s tennis player Isabella Peintner was named Big Sky Conference player of the week on Tuesday.

Peintner, the second Matador to receive the honor in three weeks, won all four of her singles matches in straight sets and also won each of her three doubles matches.

BASKETBALL

Ecstasy, then agony: UC Santa Barbara freshman center Nicole Greathouse, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year at Buena High last season, felt the thrill of winning a first-round NCAA tournament game in overtime Saturday and the sting of an overtime loss on Monday.

Greathouse made one of two free throws with 27 seconds to play Saturday against Vanderbilt to send the game into overtime.

The Gauchos won, 76-71, and Greathouse finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds. In Monday’s 69-65 loss to Illinois, Greathouse scored eight points on three-of-15 shooting. She made two of three three-point shots.
