An explosion at a power plant here cut electricity Thursday to 1.3 million customers in three northeastern Mexican states.

Troops were called out to direct traffic and help maintain order as electricity went dead in a wide swath of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas states, affecting about 5 million people.

Guillermo Delgado, a spokesman for Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission, said officials had full power restored by evening.
