Martin Luther King III to Challenge Chapman Students to Activism
Martin Luther King III, the son of the slain civil rights leader, will call Chapman University students to action Tuesday when he speaks as part of the school’s distinguished lecture series.
On Monday, the university will hold a candlelight ceremony at Gentle Springs Fountain to hear a reading of King’s speeches and to sing songs.
King is expected to touch on the history of student protest in a speech titled “To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required--The Call to Student Activism.”
A political activist, King was named president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights group his father founded in 1957, in November.
Both events are free and open to the public.
The candlelight ceremony begins at 7 p.m. on the main campus, at 333 N. Glassell St.
King’s speech begins at 8 p.m. in the Chapman Auditorium. Visitors can park in the 500 block of Palm Avenue and catch a free shuttle to campus.
