Bill Includes Funds for County Roads

Rep. Elton Gallegly announced Monday that $36.4 million for two vital Ventura County road improvement projects is included in a transportation bill.

Passage of the Building Efficient Surface Transportation and Equity Act would result in $14 million to widen part of California 23 from four to six lanes.

It would also provide $22.4 million to improve the roads leading to the Port of Hueneme, notably the Ventura Freeway-Rice Road interchange in Oxnard.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) also announced Monday that the bill calls for $1.3 million for bicycle paths in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is scheduled to vote on the bill today, and the full House could take it up as early as next week.

More than 400 congressional representatives made funding requests to the committee, so Gallegly considers himself and Ventura County fortunate to get the allocation--more than double the $15.5 million the county expected to receive.

“The committee knows I’m the last guy in line for pork,” said Gallegly (R-Simi Valley). “But this was important, for the growth and safety of Ventura County.”
