The Santa Ana Unified School District has received a $75,000 grant from the Ford Foundation to study ways to improve math and reading programs.

Supt. Al Mijares said the grant complements the district’s new focus on teaching the three R’s from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Santa Ana Unified was one of nine school districts that received a Ford Foundation grant to examine ways to improve educational curriculum.

Once the study is complete, Santa Ana Unified will apply for a $1-million grant to implement recommended changes to its math and reading classes.

Some of the money also will be used to research methods to improve student leadership programs and to increase parental involvement in the district.
