The first thing they did Thursday at Westside Middle School was disconnect the fire alarm--the same one that lured four students and one teacher to their death in a barrage of gunfire.

No lessons were taught, and all outdoor activities were canceled. Students made cards for the 11 people who were wounded.

Also Thursday, police released eight minutes of frantic 911 calls made from the school after the shooting in which callers said gunfire was coming “from everywhere” and pleaded for help.

“There’s been blood loss. People with blood lost,” one caller says.

“We have several children down. We need more than one ambulance,” says another.

At the wake of two of the slain girls Thursday night, hundreds of their classmates hugged and cried, and viewing lines went into the parking lot. Next to the coffins were photographs of Paige Herring and Natalie Brooks, both 12. Funeral services were set for today. Services for the other two slain students--Britthney Varner, 11, and Stephanie Johnson, 12--and teacher Shannon Wright were set for Saturday.
