Nelson Records Top Mark in 800 Meters This Season

Maika Nelson recorded the fastest 800-meter time in Orange County this year when she finished in 2 minutes 22 seconds as Brea Olinda beat Savanna, 109-27, in an Orange League girls’ track and field meet Thursday at Brea Olinda.

Erin Kelly’s time of 12.6 in the 100 meters is one of the top three marks in the county, and junior Nikole Shaw also had impressive marks in the 200 (26.8) and long jump (16-7 1/4) for the Wildcats.

In an Orange League boys’ meet:

Brea Olinda 114, Savanna 18--Rasuli Webster won the 100 (10.9) and the 200 (22.5) for Brea (5-1, 1-0). Chris Wattanaporn was also solid for Brea, winning the 110 (16.1) and the 300 hurdles (42.9).

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 82, Santa Ana 53--DeShaun Foster swept the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.5) for visiting Tustin (3-0, 1-0). Santa Ana is 1-3, 0-1.

Westminster 67, Servite 61--Elijah McCarthy won the 100 (11.4) and the 200 (23.4) for Westminster (2-2, 1-0) and teammate Nathan Coelho won the pole vault (10-0) and the 300 hurdles (41.5).

In Empire League badminton:

No. 6 Loara 12, No. 4 Century 7--Loara got a sweep in girls’ doubles, as the Saxons (6-2, 2-0) earned their second upset of the week. Nhu Lieng and Nina Mai swept, 15-7, 15-10 and 15-6, 15-2. The No. 2 team, Huong Nguyen and Tina Dao, won 15-1, 15-2, and 15-1, 15-2.

In Garden Grove League golf:

La Quinta 218, Garden Grove 220--La Quinta’s Justin Sciarra and Scott Drake tied for low score, each shooting five-over par 40 as La Quinta held on to defeat host Garden Grove at Willowick. Yee Liang’s 42 was the low score for the Argonauts.

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 194, Newport Harbor 201--Senior Scott Henderson had two birdies for Santa Margarita (2-1, 1-1), shooting a one-under 35 at Coto de Caza.

In Garden Grove League softball:

No. 3 Pacifica 8, La Quinta 0--Pacifica’s Amanda Freed threw a no-hitter needing only 76 pitches to strike out 19 batters. Only a fourth-inning fielding error prevented Freed from a perfect game. Shawna Goessling was two for two with an RBI and a stolen base and Freed also drove in a run.

In nonleague softball:

No. 8 Santa Margarita 1, Dana Hills 0--Karlie Riess scored on a triple by Krystal Fonte in the bottom of the seventh for Santa Margarita (8-1-1). Danielle Rodriguez (4-1) threw a one-hitter for the Eagles, striking out six.

Estancia 5, Long Beach Poly 4--Cari Fricker hit a home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning for Estancia (2-3). Joanna Danner pitched a seven-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Estancia.

La Mirada 2-0, Sonora 0-1--Jenny Finch struck out 13 and walked none for La Mirada (3-2). Both of La Mirada’s runs came in the fourth inning and were unearned. Sonora is 6-3. In the second game, Andee Lindgren gave up one hit in 10 shutout innings. She also drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

St. Margaret’s 4, Cerritos Valley Christian 0 (8)--Abbey Arnold had a career-high and school-record 19 strikeouts in a no-hitter for St. Margaret’s (5-1).

In Garden Grove League boys’ swimming:

Pacifica 103, Los Amigos 68--Mike Riordan won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.84, which is a Southern Section qualifying time. Riordan also won the 100 backstroke (59.22) and was on three winning relay teams.

In Golden West League boys’ tennis:

No. 9 Servite 12, Santa Ana 6--Jensen Omana and Peter Park swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Servite (7-1, 2-0). Teammate Ryan Moore swept in singles for the Friars.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

No. 6 Irvine 3, No. 4 Marina 0--Jonathan Epperson had 45 assists and five aces in Irvine’s 16-14, 15-13, 15-9, victory. Chris Ferguson had 15 kills and Anthony Aquino had 14 for Irvine (6-0), which overcame a 12-7 deficit in the first game.

No. 10 Mater Dei 3, Lakewood 1--Pat Cope had 18 kills, Martin Prietto 15 and D.J. Sambek 13 for Mater Dei, which won 14-16, 15-7, 15-10, 15-12. Jim Munoz had 61 assists for the Monarchs (6-0).
