An 11-year-old Simi Valley girl was in critical condition Friday night after being struck by a van while riding her bicycle in a residential neighborhood earlier in the day.

The girl suffered skull and nose fractures and bleeding on the brain. She was in the intensive care unit at Simi Valley Adventist Hospital, said Sgt. Ron Chambers of the Simi Valley Police Department.

Police and hospital officials refused to identify the girl, who is a student at Berylwood Elementary School in Simi Valley.

The girl was struck about 2:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Bridget Avenue, police said. She apparently emerged from behind a parked car into the path of a 1986 Dodge van driven by Jolene Kitchen, Chambers said.

Kitchen, 45, of Simi Valley was not cited. Chambers did not know whether the girl was wearing a helmet.
