MOVIES

“Lost in Space,” inspired by the old TV series, is a science-fiction adventure about a family’s ill-fated voyage aboard a sabotaged spaceship. Gary Oldman, William Hurt, Mimi Rogers and Matt LeBlanc star with otherworldly creatures and high-tech robots. The film opens Friday in general release.

MOVIES

The thriller “Mercury Rising” stars Bruce Willis as an outcast FBI agent protecting an orphaned 9-year-old autistic savant (Miko Hughes) who is targeted for assassination when he inadvertently deciphers a top-secret military code. The film, with Alec Baldwin, opens Friday in general release.

THEATER

Alfie learns what it’s all about in “What the World Needs Now . . . A Musical Fable,” Gillian Lynne and Kenny Solms’ world-premiere musical, revolving around the songs of Bacharach and David, about friends on a quest for romance. It opens Thursday at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.

Brenda Vaccaro headlines as Diana Vreeland in “Full Gallop,” the off-Broadway hit by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson that begins when the spirited doyenne of fashion was fired from Vogue in 1971. The production, directed by Nicholas Martin, opens Monday at the Coronet Theatre.

POP MUSIC

An all-star lineup will gather at the Shrine Auditorium tonight for “Dead Man Walking: The Concert.” The bill for the benefit show combines such diverse talents as Eddie Vedder, Ani DiFranco, Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Michelle Shocked and Steve Earle, above.

MUSIC

John Adams’ “Halleluja Junction”--written for the two pianists of the House Blends ensemble, Grant Gershon’s Getty Center residence group--receives its world premiere performance at the new Brentwood showplace Friday and Saturday. The pianists are Gershon and Gloria Cheng-Cochran.

DANCE

The “Sole/Soul” percussive dance series at the Fountain Theatre in Hollywood hosts “Flamenco Fusion,” with dancer Laila del Monte and her guitarist husband, Adam del Monte, adding modern and world dance influences to traditional flamenco. It runs Thursday through next Sunday.

VIDEO

You’ll either laugh yourself silly or scratch your head in disbelief over “Bean,” a loopy British comedy starring Rowan Atkinson. The international box-office hit, based on Atkinson’s popular TV series, finds Bean causing havoc in Los Angeles. The video arrives in stores on Tuesday.
