Randy Velarde, on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured right elbow, was cleared to take batting practice this weekend. The Angels are hoping that Velarde, who sat out last season after reconstructive surgery on his elbow, will be back by the end of April.

With Velarde out, Norberto Martin will play second base for the Angels. It’s the first time he has been an everyday player since he was in the minor leagues.

“I spent 10 years in the minors and I wasn’t sure I would ever get my chance to play in the big leagues,” said Martin, who was a reserve with the Chicago White Sox the last four seasons. “I just want to be in the big leagues. I don’t care if I’m an everyday player or not.”

He is one for now. Manager Terry Collins said Martin would play five days a week.

Because of Wednesday’s rain at Lake Elsinore, Allen Watson will pitch Monday in an exhibition game against Cal State Fullerton at Fullerton. Whom he will pitch against is the question.

“He’s either going to pitch against Fullerton or against us,” Collins said.

The Angels could allow Watson to pitch for Fullerton and the Titans probably wouldn’t mind saving their pitching. Watson gave up four runs in two innings against the Dodgers on Friday. It was the first time he had pitched in six days.

Jason Dickson, who was also rained out Wednesday, will also pitch Monday.

The Angels will make a few roster decisions today, but Collins said that the final moves will come after the Fullerton game.

“We’ll do some things [today], but we still want to look at some guys,” Collins said.

First baseman Chris Pritchett probably will go on the disabled list because of an injured right elbow, which has bothered him most of the spring. Pritchett was assigned to minor league camp on March 19.
