NATO Expansion
Re “Will Expansion Undercut the Military?” Commentary, March 26:
The authors make very good points that NATO expansion should be delayed until all of the questions raised have been answered.
However, some questions that have not been asked lately should also be answered. Should the United States remain a member of NATO? Does Europe really need to be defended by the United States? If the Cold War has been won, why is NATO necessary at all? Doesn’t the European Union create all the economic cohesion necessary? Since the U.S. is not supposed to be the world policeman, shouldn’t we distance ourselves from European affairs?
