From Times staff and wire reports

Vice President Al Gore will mark his 50th birthday today by having breakfast with his parents at the family farm in Carthage, after spending the night there. Then he will help renovate a home for the needy in Washington, D.C., a spokeswoman said. “That’s how he wanted to spend his birthday,” Jodi Sakol said, “with his parents and helping the needy.”
