Johnson, Katz to Give Master Classes

Graham Johnson and Martin Katz will give master classes in the art of accompaniment in the UCI Concert Hall, West Peltason Drive and Mesa Road. The classes are free and open to the public.

Monday, Johnson will focus on settings of poems by Heinrich Heine, 1-4 p.m.; Tuesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m., he will explore the English song tradition from Purcell to Britten.

Katz will give a master class titled “Breaking the Song Barrier” on May 18, 1-3 p.m. On May 20, he will focus on solo vocal music by contemporary composers, 10 a.m.-noon, and on settings of texts by Verlaine, Goethe, Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson, 1-3 p.m.
