District to Charge Fee for Riding School Bus
After spending months revising its transportation policy, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District trustees voted Tuesday to charge a yearly busing fee.
Starting in the 1998-99 school year, the district will charge $180 each for the first two children in a family and $90 for the third child; any additional child in a family rides for free.
The fee, which will help the district cover busing expenses, was originally approved in August. But district officials said the policy was too vague and needed revisions.
According to the revised policy, the fee applies to students in kindergarten through 12th grade who live outside designated campus walking zones. Special education and handicapped students and families meeting low income levels will ride for free.
The district sent out notices in April, informing parents of the fee and changes in bus routes. Reminders will be sent throughout July, said Steve Umber, director of transportation.
Bus passes should be available by Aug. 3.
