Parental Consent for Abortions OKd
One day after approving a “Choose Life” specialty license plate, Florida lawmakers passed a bill requiring girls under 18 to notify at least one parent before they can get an abortion. The Senate passed the measure, 31-9. Since the House passed the bill earlier, it is sent directly to Gov. Lawton Chiles, who supports abortion rights but hasn’t said whether he would veto the bill. Opponents said girls who don’t feel they can go to their parents will try to have illegal abortions. Proponents said parents need to advise their children on such a serious decision. Lawmakers earlier approved a bill that advocates say would make Florida the first state to offer drivers the chance to make their views on abortion known through a specialty license plate.
