Canyon Development Plan Topic of Hearing

A shopping center, self-storage facility and fast-food restaurant proposed for the last major piece of agricultural land in Anaheim Hills has triggered strong opposition from canyon residents.

The City Council on Tuesday will hold a public hearing to consider the proposal for the site off Via Cortez and Santa Ana Canyon Road.

Concerned Citizens of the Canyon has formed to fight the development, which residents say is too large for the area and will bring traffic congestion, noise and crime.

Residents have gathered more than 1,500 signatures and distributed more than 3,000 fliers. Another mailing will be sent today to 2,000 households.

“The development itself is not good for the area--it’s too big,” said Debbie O’Neill, a 24-year resident and president of the citizens group. “We don’t need another shopping center or the traffic on Santa Ana Canyon.”

On March 30, the Planning Commission approved a change in the city’s general plan to allow the development on the 24.5 acres, 21 of which had been zoned for homes.

Tenants of the commercial center, proposed by GME Development in Irvine, could include a McDonald’s drive-through, Cost Plus and other stores.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m., with the public hearing at 6, in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Information: (714) 765-5166.
