‘Silent Killer’ Can Be Stopped

Share

A new warmth in the spring sun has been chasing El Nino’s memories and turning the attention of Orange County families to the pleasures of the outdoors. But two Sunday gatherings for Easter several weeks ago were a reminder of a perennial danger posed by back yard swimming pools, hot tubs and other bodies of water.

A 10-year-old girl and a 3 year-old boy avoided becoming tragic statistics in separate incidents when relatives plucked them from pools and revived them.

Too often, such youngsters are not so fortunate when what authorities call “the silent killer” strikes. Children can slip unnoticed into water and disappear from view or escape attention even for seconds. Officials note that there often are no cries for help in such instances.

Family gatherings and situations where relatives who may be caring temporarily for youngsters require special alertness. Parents often are more vigilant because they are used to anticipating household dangers. Grandparents and other care providers need to be on guard against leaving sliding glass doors unlocked or having unfenced pools that are an invitation to tragedy.

Orange County fire officials this year are encouraging pool owners to designate “water watchers,” individuals who constantly monitor young children near pools. That is a good idea.

Other regular safety tips include fencing pools and having gates latched at all times. It also pays safety dividends to have a phone by the pool, both to avoid leaving children alone when the phone rings and to have access to 911. There should be childproof locks on doors leading out to the pool area.

Capt. Scott Brown of the Orange County Fire Authority reminds us that drowning is the leading cause of death by injury for children younger than 5 in the county and state.

In previous years, Orange County, with its long months of good weather, has had the dubious distinction of leading the nation with child drownings and near-drownings.

The return of the sunshine and longer days are a time to enjoy the area and be outdoors more often.

This is also a reminder to be on guard to prevent tragedy.
