Re “Gingrich Tears Into Clinton for ‘Enormous Scandal,’ ” May 1:

Once again House Speaker Newt Gingrich is poised to beat the Republican Party into political critical condition, reminiscent of his failed attempt to reap political rewards from the past government shutdown, by resorting to partisan politics and threatening to block needed funding programs if President Clinton fails to cooperate with the congressional investigations. So while Gingrich sets out to stymie any progress in bipartisan negotiations, Clinton appears as the one more concerned about our nation and in moving things forward.

Perhaps Gingrich should take a vacation and revise his book to include this latest chapter. Obviously he hasn’t learned from his mistakes.

* Gingrich has been taking every public speaking opportunity this past week to challenge the president to come clean and stop stonewalling the present investigation into his alleged campaign finance abuses. If you boil Gingrich’s challenge down to three words, they would be “tell the truth.”

Mike McCurry, White House press secretary and “damage control field specialist,” stated that Gingrich’s latest challenge is to be understood as the resurrection of “nasty Newt.” He then put the latest official White House spin on the matter and pooh-poohed the whole thing as partisan and all but stated that Gingrich has lost his senses.

When did challenging someone to tell the truth become “partisan”?

* Only a year after his own congressional reprimand for improper financial dealings and Gingrich is now pontificating truth, justice and the American way for Bill Clinton. Is there no humility left in this world?
