Phoenix House Teens to Perform in Opera

Share

As part of their recovery program, about 20 teenagers from the Phoenix House drug treatment program will sing tonight with a group of opera professionals.

The teens will play the part of the chorus in the opera “Nerd Landia.” The opera, with music by Carlos Rodriguez, is a story of nerds falling in love and has been part of L.A. Opera’s youth outreach program for a number of years.

The Lake View Terrace-based drug treatment program has worked with the L.A. Opera for five years on a variety of productions.

Preparations for the opera and the performance are part of an overall effort to help the teenagers learn how to start and finish projects, Phoenix House vice president Elizabeth Stanley-Salazar said.

“Participation in the production of the opera is a valuable educational and cultural experience for the teenagers,” she said.

“And it is an important part of the larger effort to help them overcome substance abuse and lead productive lives.”

Phoenix House operates 10 treatment centers in California.

Tonight’s performance, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd. in Sepulveda Pass.

A reception will follow at 8:30 p.m.
