23 Die Fighting Two Forest Fires

At least 23 people died battling forest fires in central Mexico, including 19 volunteers who burned to death trying to save their village from the flames, officials said. Authorities evacuated more than 500 people from the village of Texocuixpan, about 90 miles east of Mexico City, officials said. Twelve people were reported missing. As many as 600 volunteer firefighters were battling the blaze, which witnesses said began Friday. Two soldiers and two volunteer firefighters also died battling fires in Perote, Veracruz, about 150 miles east of Mexico City, according to President Ernesto Zedillo.
