Sailing Ship to Come Aboard as Aquarium Attraction

When the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific opens June 20, there will be an added attraction: The American Pride, a 130-foot schooner, is moving from Alamitos Bay in Long Beach to Rainbow Harbor, where the aquarium is located.
The American Pride has been at Alamitos Bay since February 1997, but because of the vessel’s design, its docking maneuvers and rocking motion have damaged the berth where it is moored.
Marine Bureau Manager Mark Sandoval said the schooner needs to be moved. And its new location means the schooner will be seen by more people. “I think she is unique enough that she is a draw wherever she is,” Sandoval said.
The three-masted schooner is owned by the American Heritage Marine Institute in Orange County. The ship is chartered for charity events and used for educational programs.
The former fishing vessel, built in 1941, will join the Californian, the state’s official tall ship, at Rainbow Harbor.
