Oxnard and Port Hueneme police arrested three drunk drivers Friday and another on suspicion of public intoxication at a sobriety checkpoint on Ventura Road.

Of the 1,135 drivers who passed through the checkpoint, more than 1,000 were screened by officers.

In addition, police arrested another individual on an outstanding warrant from a previous drunk driving arrest and issued 12 citations for license and vehicle code violations.

According to police, one citation was issued after a man tried to warn approaching drivers using a beer advertisement scrawled with the words “checkpoint.”

The 34-year-old Port Hueneme resident told police he had previously been arrested for a DUI and was only trying to “help his friends.”

The sobriety checkpoint program is funded through a 27-month state grant to improve safety along Ventura County roads.

Police reported a 21% decrease in the number of fatal and injury DUI car accidents from January through March, compared with the same period in 1995.

Residents interested in learning how they can work to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on the roads are invited to call the Oxnard-Port Hueneme Coalition to Prevent DUI at 385-7490.
